Sometimes a story has such an unsatisfying ending that I would rather have not read it at all.

The book goes on to accidentally confirm what I’m saying by revealing that the widely known and widely respected village tailor had seen one similar on the wall every day for years when he’d worked as an apprentice for another man in the village?

Also, the narrator only tells the story from his point of view, which makes it difficult to understand Luo’s position completely. The most nebbish character, son of a doctor, ends up getting an abortion for his friend’s girlfriend, without his friend ever knowing about the baby.

Perhaps I would have enjoyed the plot to rely more heavily on the whereabouts and historical context! Books by Dai Sijie. A quick read for the story, but ultimately sort of empty. It gave me a reading list of canonical Western texts without showing what it is that makes these texts so powerful. That said, I did not enjoy the book. Luo and his friend are barely eighteen when they have to leave their home and move into a village in which they will be turned into respectable communists and workers.

And this book has been sitting on my shelf for over a year now.

View all 3 comments. We were surprised to see how the alarm clock seized the imagination of the peasants. And here I’ve finally gotten to it because it’s short and I’m disappointed. The boys seem to have little to no emotional connection to what is happening to their parents, what is happening to the culture, the country, no sense of loss or discovery.

In my opinion, there’s not nearly enough fiction out there covering China’s Cultural Revolution, and the fact that this centers on the story of two young men, sons of dissidents, costkrera for re-education, who discover the world of French philosophy and literature through banned books, should have made this one of my favorite novels ever.

Of course, there were times when the journey was worth it eg. The novel has been translated into twenty-five languages, and finally into his mother tongue after the movie adaptation. The little seamstress is present, but to me more as a side note and not dosturera actual center of the story.

Costurerra a cheerful enough story, given the subject matter, and apart from some yucky details of the village life, there is nothing tragic or revolting about the life of the protagonists. I had a dream about this book yesterday, when I was about one-third in: Given the shortness of the story it’s difficult to take sides. But they also grow as friends. As well as for one of the boys to befriend the little seamstress and knock her up before leaving it up to his friend to try and find her a place for an abortion when it’s illegal to not only have an abortion, but to get married before 25 years of age. I was hoping to feel their loss in their being separated f I’m not sure what i was expecting from this book, but i was disappointed by what i got.
